Food X-Ray Foreign Object Inspection

What can X-ray inspection find that a metal detector cannot?

A metal detector reacts to conductive material only. X-ray inspection works on density, so it also finds glass, stone, bone, ceramic and high-density plastic — the contaminants that cause most food recalls. The same image can check fill level, count and packaging integrity.

Where does it sit in the line?

  • Packaging line: After sealing, before case packing, so contaminated packs are rejected before they reach the pallet
  • Bulk product: On the conveyor before portioning, for loose or unpacked product
  • Reject station: Air blast, pusher or flap reject synchronised with the inspection signal

How does it support HACCP and BRC audits?

The system logs every inspection with a timestamp and image, which is the evidence auditors ask for. Validation uses test pieces at defined sizes, and the reject confirmation is recorded automatically rather than written by hand.

Frequently asked questions

What contaminants can it detect?

Metal, glass, stone, bone, ceramic and high-density plastic. Detection sensitivity depends on product density and pack size, and is validated with test pieces.

Can it run on a wet or frozen line?

Yes, with the appropriate washdown and temperature specification. The line conditions are confirmed during project planning.

Does it replace a metal detector?

Usually it replaces it on lines where glass, bone or stone is a risk; some producers keep both for defence in depth.
